Observing Go Texan Day

On the eve of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the collective residents of greater Houston collaborate to celebrate the spirit of the rodeo by participating in Go Texan Day. Essentially, it’s an excuse to wear jeans, boots, hats and big belt buckles to work. Or for the ladies, western romance. My quickly pulled together Go Texan ensemble for the day includes boots, long knit skirt, crisp white cotton blouse with boning (for that touch of romance) tortoiseshell (faux, of course) earrings, soft scarf tied kerchief style, and casual updo. Tada! Instantly transported to a gracious ranch dripping with old-style Texas charm.

The HLSR is the largest rodeo in the world. The festivities will begin with a parade, celebrating the arrival of the trail riders that hailed from destinations near and far beyond the Houston borders. Other notable highlights, besides the drama and excitement of the livestock events and rodeo competition itself, include the carnival, barbeque cookoff, art contests, and a spectacular wine tasting event.

So, everybody wang-chung, I mean, Go Texan!

  1. My dad was in a clinical trial at MD Anderson Cancer Center and was in Houston visiting his doctors last year during the rodeo. He and my mom went one day and I will always be grateful to a group of tiny cowkids trying to ride sheep for putting a smile on his face during a very dark time. (He is now in full remission, thanks to his doctors and, just maybe, those silly sheep.)

  2. I have a hard time seeing wine tasting at a rodeo......a big rugged bull rider sipping on a glass of Chardonny just does not seem right.

  3. oh yeah, mutton busting - my all time favorite rodeo event. I am looking forward to it this year to be sure. I am thankful to hear about your father's experience at MDACC. I am grateful that I am part of this institution. The incredible science that occurs here every day and the compassionate patient care makes me want to come to work every day. Hugs to your family :)

  4. without a doubt, the wine tasters will find themselves vastly outnumbered by the long neck beer drinkers.

  5. Look at those hats! Oddly enough, it was a gray felt Stetson that looked the best on me. I may have to get a new one...

BTW, my dear, I'm sorry I didn't have my camera with me for that Ba-Donka-Donk sighting...otherwise I could have sent you a pic ;)

  6. Where is the pic of our Texas cowgirl? Can't wait for your posts about the rodeo, and to see if you got into those places you wanted without a pass or if you secured one!

  8. That sounds like a BLAST. I can't help but think back to the movie Urban Cowboy (omg, and I get stuck watching everytime it comes on tv, along with Dirty Dancing but that's another story) and I'm wondering if you will ride the bull and drink the worm?! Enjoy!
